freitag.de What is improvisation? An essay by Uli Aumüller. Ever since the beginning of mankind there was music & originally it must have been improvised. With the invention of the written language a not always decently fought battle began as to which music was more genuinely conceived: music performed sponteneously or music performed from memory? With regard to the 'Musiktriennale Köln 2007 , with a special emphasis on "Improvisation", Uli Aumüller observed and had an interview with 10 very contrastive ensembles and musicians. He asked them if there are any similarities between a Baroque flute quartet & Syrian-Arabian music, Noise from Japan & French organ improvisation or Jazz & improvisations by Chopin, Bach or Schumann. The film gives an insight into the diversity and beauty of different kinds of musical improvisation and also shows the unconditional dedication of the musicians. A dedication also presenting itself during improvising, when the musicians seem to be able to express themselves even better. This is not the only paradox the film encounters. To be able to answer the question: "what is improvisation?" in one clear sentence is not an easy task at all.
